Overview:
Waking up before 6:00 AM? You’re not alone. Early morning wakeups are one of the most frustrating sleep challenges for parents — but there are solutions rooted in rhythm, light, and routine.
Why It Happens:
Around 4–6 AM, sleep is lighter and more sensitive to disturbances like hunger, light exposure, or overtiredness from the day before. Babies and toddlers often struggle to connect sleep cycles in the early morning.
Common Causes of Early Wakings #
- Too late or too early of a bedtime
- Overtiredness from poor naps or inconsistent routines
- Too much light in the room before sunrise
- Hunger (especially in younger babies)
- Nap timing that throws off the daily rhythm
- Habitual waking from past reinforcement
How to Fix It #
1. Adjust bedtime
Overtired babies often wake earlier, not later. Try moving bedtime earlier by 15–30 minutes and track changes for 3–5 days.
2. Optimize the sleep environment
- Use blackout curtains
- Add a sound machine to mask early morning noises
- Keep room cool and cozy (68–72°F)
3. Cap the last nap
Too much day sleep late in the day can lead to early rising. Try adjusting nap lengths or wake windows.
4. Don’t rush in too soon
If baby is content, give them a few minutes. Early waking can become a habit if met with instant stimulation or feeds.
5. Try a “wake-to-sleep” approach (for older babies)
Gently rouse baby 15–30 minutes before their usual wake time for a few minutes to help reset their cycle.
When It’s Just a Phase #
Babies often go through short bursts of early waking during growth spurts, regressions, or transitions (like dropping a nap). Stay consistent and supportive — it usually resolves with time.
