Overview:
Creating a safe sleep space is one of the most important things you can do for your baby. Following trusted guidelines helps reduce the risk of SIDS and supports longer, more peaceful sleep.
Why It Matters:
Safe sleep isn’t just about what’s in (or not in) the crib — it’s about your baby’s sleep environment, positioning, and routines. When safety comes first, rest comes easier for everyone.
The ABCs of Safe Sleep #
Always place your baby to sleep:
- Alone
- Back
- in a Crib (or bassinet)
Crib Setup Checklist: #
✅ Firm, flat mattress
✅ Fitted crib sheet only (no extras)
✅ No pillows, toys, bumpers, or blankets
✅ Baby sleeps on back until they can roll over independently
✅ Sleep sack or wearable blanket instead of loose blankets
✅ Crib or bassinet meets current safety standards
Room Environment Tips: #
- Room-sharing (not bed-sharing) is recommended for at least the first 6 months
- Keep the room cool, dark, and quiet — ideal sleep temp is 68–72°F
- Use white noise to block out household sounds
- Avoid overheating — no hats, thick blankets, or overdressing
When to Transition Out of a Bassinet or Cradle: #
- When your baby rolls over, sits up, or exceeds weight/height limits
- Typically around 4–6 months
Additional Sleep Safety Tips: #
- Offer a pacifier for sleep once breastfeeding is established
- Ensure cords (baby monitor, blinds) are well out of reach
- Practice tummy time during the day to strengthen muscles
- Register your crib to receive recall alerts
